Top 3 Benefits of Alter G Treadmills for Physical Therapy in Charleston

One of the most common questions we get at Premier Physical Therapy about Alter G treadmills is whether they really work or not. We get it – antigravity technology may seem out of place in a custom physical therapy program. Here are just a few of the biggest benefits of using antigravity treadmills at our physical therapy office:

 Physiotherapy Summers Corner, SC

Running on a traditional treadmill is a popular exercise, but it can also cause harm to your bones, joints, and muscles due to the high stress and pressure on your body. Antigravity treadmills solve this issue by using unweighting technology to help users achieve their desired workout. The AlterG can unweight up to 80% of a user's body weight, reducing stress and shock on the lower body

By wearing specialized shorts and entering the air chamber surrounding the Alter G treadmill, the machine can be calibrated to pressurize the chamber and unweight users, allowing them to run without pain and without interfering with their natural gait mechanics. This technology isn't just for athletes. It can be used for a range of physiotherapy needs, whether you're recovering from knee surgery or simply want to run without harming your knees as much.

It is an effective and safe form of physical therapy that uses evidence-based techniques to help you feel and move better, whether you're 25 or 65. Curious why you should consider this service? Keep reading to find out.

Reduced Risk of Falling
Reduced Risk of Falling

Certain patients who experience problems with balance and stability might not be suitable for physical therapy on land. However, aquatic therapy decreases the likelihood of falls and fall-related injuries, enabling them to exercise and recover in a secure environment. With time, balance issues can be resolved, and confidence can be regained.

Coordination
Coordination and Balance Improvements

To piggyback off of our last point, aquatic therapy is a type of physical therapy in Summers Corner, SC, that can help patients improve their coordination and balance. This, in turn, can reduce their risk of falls outside of the pool. The water used in aquatic therapy slows down movement and prevents falls, which gives patients the time they need to regain their posture if they get off balance. Research has shown that hydrotherapy can be particularly beneficial for older patients, as it can help them improve their balance and recovery. As a result, they may become less fearful of falling and more confident during physical activities.

Less Stress on Your Joints and Bones
Less Stress on Your Joints and Bones

When a patient is immersed in water up to their neck, their body weight is reduced by nearly 90%. This buoyancy helps to decrease the load on weight-bearing muscles, bones, and joints. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions or injuries, as landing on a hard surface could be unsafe or painful.

Improve Your Cardio
Improve Your Cardio

Exercising in a pool can significantly improve one's aerobic capacity and breathing, which in turn promotes overall health. In particular, engaging in aerobic exercise can lower the risk of coronary artery disease and help maintain healthy blood pressure levels. This makes it an ideal form of physical activity for patients who require aerobic exercise but face mobility or pain issues that limit their ability to engage in land-based exercise.

Help Alleviate Swollen Joints

Hydrostatic pressure refers to the pressure exerted by fluids that are confined in a space. When a person undergoes aquatic physical therapy, the water surrounding their body exerts hydrostatic pressure. This pressure helps to improve circulation, reduce swelling, decrease joint stiffness, and increase overall mobility.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - The weather is getting hotter and more humid, Memorial Day Weekend is just around the corner, and schools will be letting out soon.

So that means summer tourists will soon be flocking to South Carolina, one of the nation’s top destinations for visitors.

An economist with the University of South Carolina said current economic conditions all point to a strong summer for tourism in the Palmetto State.

“Consumer spending remains strong as the labor market remains strong, unemployment is low in South Carolina and across the US, and we also continue to see strong wage growth in 2024,” USC Research Economist Joey Von Nessen said.

Von Nessen said South Carolina is likely to see more growth in tourism as it has the last few years.

But he added that growth might taper a bit this summer, with South Carolina’s tourism industry fully recovered post-pandemic, more quickly than some experts predicted.

“One reason is that South Carolina is a drive-to state, meaning that a lot of our tourism comes from people driving from border states and from elsewhere in the country, so that’s enabled our tourism sector, number one, not to fall as fast as other states’ did during the pandemic, but number two, that means we were also able to recover much faster,” he said.

The director of South Carolina’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Duane Parrish, said tourism contributed an estimated $29 billion to the state’s economy in 2022 and employs one in 10 South Carolina workers.

He said that benefits the pocketbooks of the state’s residents too.

“Tourism-related tax collections reduced the annual tax burden for every South Carolinian by nearly $1,000,” Parrish said during an event Monday in Columbia, marking May 19-25 as South Carolina Travel and Tourism Week.

And after record years for South Carolina tourism in 2022 and 2023, Parrish expects more of that this summer as well.

“Gas prices have remained stable. Inflation seems to have cooled a bit. People have just enjoyed the outdoor recreation more since COVID than ever, and that continues on today,” he said. “We have a lot of that in South Carolina, and I anticipate a great summer, quite frankly.”

One area of focus to bring more visitors to South Carolina is sports tourism, with Parrish pointing to Darlington and the new PGA Tour stop in Myrtle Beach as just a few examples.

He said this sector makes up about 10% of the entire tourism industry, with more growth expected in the coming years.

These DDTwo teachers were treated to an elegant evening in their honor to celebrate their success as the district’s top educators. The gala is designed to express the district’s deep appreciation for their expertise in shaping the lives and educational journeys of DDTwo students. Teachers were surrounded by their family and friends as they enjoyed a gourmet dinner before the recognition ceremony.

Each Teacher of the Year from the district received a recognition plaque for their classroom, a framed photo of their class and a monetary gift. The Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce presented each teacher with certificates from the state House and Senate as well as from the Chamber and a framed piece of art.

Sarah Nesbit from Summerville High School was named the 2024 District Teacher of the Year with colleagues, friends, family and the community in attendance. In the final interview, Nesbit received the highest ratings from a selection committee comprising a retired teacher and two community members to become the District Teacher of the Year.

“It is incredibly humbling to be named DDTwo’s District Teacher of the Year,” Nesbit said. “I am thankful to be a part of this amazing district for 11 years.”

The Dorchester Two Educational Foundation presented Ms. Nesbit with a trip for two to a destination of her choice. Her options include all-expenses-paid travel and a stay in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas or Wyoming. As the fifth lowest-funded district in the state, the foundation is instrumental in funding essential initiatives that directly support the teachers and students of DDTwo. This trip will be an incredible experience for Ms. Nesbit, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

In addition, thanks to the support of DDTwo’s community partners, Nesbit also received a beautiful arrangement of roses donated by The Blossom Shop as well as a basket full of generous gifts from Crumbl Cookies, Dorchester Two Educational Foundation, Fancy Trimmins, Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce, Halls Chophouse, Hood Construction, Millie Lewis Models and Talent, Paige’s Okra Grill, Robinson & Robinson Insurance Company, Summerville Orchestra, The Winchester Spa and Salon, Nico Romo Hospitality Group and Simple Treasures.

Nesbit will represent Dorchester School District Two in the South Carolina Teacher of the Year program in 2025 and serve as the leader of the DDTwo Teacher Council for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

“In a district that employs over 1,800 teachers, it is quite an honor to be named the Dorchester School District Two Teacher of the Year,” said Dr. Shane Robbins, DDTwo superintendent. “Shining stars like Sarah Nesbit make Team Dorchester a special place. I commend you for your dedication to your students and the passion you bring to the classroom every day.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - After noticing potholes on Dorchester Road one driver says nothing has been done to create a smoother ride.

Ronald Boden is relatively new to the Summerville area and says he adores his neighborhood. As an area for senior citizens, Boden says it’s quiet, peaceful and safe. Horizons at Summer’s Corner is home to Boden. However, he says houses continue to be built in the area and people gradually keep moving in.

Boden drives Dorchester Road regularly for doctors’ appointments and to pick up his medication. After a few months, he noticed a stretch of Dorchester Road full of potholes. Driving in the far-right lane from Linger Longer Drive to Bacon’s Bridge Road, Boden says the potholes not only seem endless but dangerous.

“There’s been potholes in a lot of places,” Boden says. “But this is one stretch that’s about three-quarters of a mile where the potholes are endless.”

Boden says only if you’re driving in the far-right lane of this stretch of Dorchester will you run into these potholes. Damaging your tires or the suspension of your car could be possible if you hit a pothole while driving.

“For one thing people like to dodge potholes. When they see that many, they’ll turn unconsciously into the next lane. And that’s dangerous,” Boden says.

If you have a concern along a state-maintained roadway, you can submit a work order here. However, that’s not the only issue that’s been hoping to get resolved.

Last week, a viewer wrote about the lack of crosswalk signage in both directions on Fort Johnson Road at Tallwood and Joe Rivers on James Island. With schools, children and families in the area, cars drive frequently through waiting to cross. Two days after this concern was brought to SCDOT, signs are now in both directions on Fort Johnson Road.

If you have a road concern that’s driving you crazy, you can submit your concern to Live 5 News.

The Google DEI Data Center Summer Internship exposes students to career opportunities and transferrable skills.

It’s hard to imagine life before Google. We rely on its data to help us do the things we want to do, learn the things we want to know and become the person we want to become.

Turning to the search engine to find opportunities for professional and personal growth is one thing. But now Google is taking it to the next level, providing opportunities for real-life experiential learning for five College of Charleston students.

Thanks to a new partnership with the College, Google is inviting students to intern at the Google Data Center in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, for the first time ever. The Google DEI Data Center Summer Internship aims to expose diverse students, regardless of their major, to career opportunities and to give them transferable skills that they can leverage in a range of careers.

“This important partnership allows our students to explore unfamiliar career opportunities with a very familiar company,” says Courtney Howard, chief diversity officer and vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion at the College of Charleston. “We are confident this will be impactful for students and are thrilled that the Google Data Center reached out to the Office of Institutional Diversity with a desire to engage in a meaningful diversity partnership.”

The robust 10-week summer experience runs June 3–Aug. 9, 2024, and is broken into two parts: the six-week internship at the Google Data Center, followed by four weeks of virtual coursework.

For the first six weeks, interns will be provided campus housing, breakfast and lunch at Google, a food allowance and a stipend while spend two weeks exploring each of the three job functions at the Google Data Center:

During this time, they will also be part of the College’s Career Center Certificate Internship Program, which requires them to complete a learning agreement, make weekly journal entries, conduct an informational interview and write a summary paper. They will officially be recognized for their internships and will receive career development support.

Then, for the four remaining weeks, the students will be paid a stipend while they complete two relevant Coursera courses.

“We believe our model of combining an on-site internship with Coursera coursework is a unique approach to experiential learning and demonstrates the type of innovation that makes the College an extraordinary place to learn,” says Howard.

All College of Charleston students are invited to apply, regardless of major. AALANA, Launchpad for Success, and first-generation college students who are in their first or second year are especially encouraged to apply.

The application requires students to submit a résumé and a 350-400–word essay about why they are interested in the internship and why they think diversity, equity and inclusion are important in the workplace.

Students may apply for the Google DEI Data Center Summer Internship program via Handshake through March 1, 2024. Finalists will be interviewed March 25–April 3, 2024, and the selected students will then complete a virtual orientation for the Certificate Internship Program.
