Exercise + Fibromyalgia = Relief
February 28, 2018

What is Fibromyalgia?

The American College of Rheumatology classifies fibromyalgia as “a common neurological health problem that causes widespread pain and tenderness.” Fibromyalgia commonly affects women more than men. Symptoms of fibromyalgia include extreme fatigue, sleep issues, and problems with memory. Causes of fibromyalgia are unknown as the diagnosis is made on a case by case basis. It is thought to be caused by the central nervous system.

Can Physical Therapy help me?

Yes! Exercising in general is known to drop the amount of flare ups caused by fibromyalgia and helps memory. Simple body weight stretches and exercises will help boost energy levels to continue daily activities. Walking 30 minutes at least 3 times a week is also recommended to reduce pain and increase sleep quality. Deep breathing and mindlessness can also reduce the stress of symptoms.

At Premier Physical Therapy, we not only have land-based therapy (imagine a PT clinic that doesn’t ……scary), but we also specialize in aquatic therapy.

Our endless therapy pool is always 92 degrees which allows your body to relax(yes, the “r” word that we all know about, but don’t do enough of).  This high temperature allows the muscles and soft tissue to release which gives the ability to do exercises at an easier rate. The water also decreases your body weight up to 20% depending on how tall you are.

endless poolPremier’s therapists can help direct exercises in the pool or on land during an appointment. The recommended plan for patients with Fibromyalgia is to exercise as much as possible, usually around 2-3 times a week.  Premier also has a wellness program for those who can do exercises on their own, but do not have access to a facility.

Ask your rheumatologist about a referral to physical therapy!
