Vertigo – What is it?
December 7, 2016

Vertigo is often a symptom of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo(BPPV). It is a non-life-threatening, sudden, brief sensation of rotational movement that is triggered by certain head positions or movements. Essentially, people with vertigo feel very dizzy and often cannot move around at full potential.

We have crystals made out of calcium carbonate in our inner ear called otoconia. We experience vertigo when these crystals become dislodged and move to another canal in our ear.

Anyone can experience vertigo at some point in their life, with each case differing in severity. Often, cases of vertigo, or BPPV, have no specific cause, but can be treated. When there is movement in these small canals, a signal is sent to our brain that we are moving. When the dislodged crystals move through these canals, it sends a false sense of movement to our brain– vertigo.

Studies have shown that medication is not a proven treatment for vertigo, but physical therapy is.

Results have been in the 90% range after 1-3 treatments.
